Together We developed the TeamNL Game, an interactive quiz using advanced pose recognition and machine learning to represent the diversity of Dutch national sports. This innovative tool engages and inspires athletes and visitors at various NOC*NSF events.

Whenever NOC*NSF attended events, they struggled to represent all sports under TeamNL, instead of focusing only on the event's specific sport. This hindered their goal to inspire visitors to pursue various sports with the dream of becoming top athletes.

Impact on the Target Audience

The difficulty to showcase the diversity of TeamNL affected NOC*NSF's mission to inspire and attract young athletes. In a society where engaging the youth in sports is crucial, this lack of representation limited the potential to spark interest in the next generation of athletes.

In a world where attention is a scarce commodity, creating interactive and engaging experiences is key. NOC*NSF's challenge was not just about representation but also about making the experience fun and memorable to inspire visitors.

To fix this together with the digital sports marketing agency Wave we developed the TeamNL Game, an interactive quiz with gamified elements designed to represent various sports at NOC*NSF events. The game used advanced pose recognition technology and machine learning to create a unique and engaging experience.

How the game works

Participants at NOC*NSF events are invited to start the TeamNL Game by approaching a designated screen displaying the message "Start the TeamNL Game." Here’s how the user journey unfolds:

  • Getting Started: Participants are greeted with an inviting screen message, “Start the TeamNL Game.” They press start to begin.

  • Engaging Interaction: An animated figure on the screen performs a sports pose, like a baseball swing or volleyball spike. Participants are prompted to mimic the pose.

  • Real-Time Feedback: As participants imitate the pose, the game instantly assesses their accuracy and provides immediate feedback, letting them know if they’ve nailed it or need to try again.

  • Advancing Challenges: The game progressively increases in difficulty, with each successful pose leading to a more challenging one. This keeps participants engaged and motivated to improve.

  • Fun and Competition: After the allotted time, participants receive a final score based on their performance, adding a fun, competitive element to the experience.

Technology Behind the Solution:

To create a seamless and engaging experience, we leveraged advanced technologies that work behind the scenes to make the TeamNL Game both fun and interactive:

  • Pose Recognition Technology: The game uses a camera to film participants and recognize their poses in real-time. We utilized Google Research's MoveNet model, chosen for its speed and accuracy in translating camera images into body key points.

  • Machine Learning: Using the Keras API, we trained a custom model with 17,000 images of different sports poses. This model was meticulously trained to understand subtle variations in poses, ensuring accurate recognition.

"The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning."

How we made TeamNL more diverse by gamification

The TeamNL Game provided a dynamic and interactive way for young participants to engage with various sports, making the idea of becoming an athlete fun and inspiring. This aligns with societal goals of promoting physical activity and sports participation among youth.

For NOCNSF, the TeamNL Game effectively represented the diversity of sports, enhancing their presence at events and supporting their mission to inspire future athletes. The innovative use of technology showcased NOCNSF as a forward-thinking organization committed to youth engagement.

The development of the TeamNL game bridged the gap between technology and human interaction, creating a memorable and impactful experience for NOC*NSF's audience. This project exemplifies how creativity and innovation can work together to achieve meaningful engagement in experiential marketing.
